Venetian Blinds — Aluminium & Timber

The most adjustable window in the house — full view, filtered light, or full privacy, all at any height.

Timber & bamboo venetians

50mm basswood or bamboo slats — warm, architectural, the natural choice for a heritage home. They suit the deep-set sash windows found across Noorder-Paarl and the older streets of Courtrai, sitting comfortably alongside original joinery in a way an aluminium slat can't quite match. Keep them out of high-steam rooms; a quality lacquer handles normal humidity, but a bathroom still wants aluminium.

Aluminium venetians

Slats in 25mm (crisp, most popular) or 50mm (bolder, fewer lines) — the moisture champion for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. A large colour range including wood-look finishes keeps the budget-friendly option looking the part on newer estate homes too.

Why adjustability matters here

A roller is open or closed by degrees; a venetian steers light direction — tilt up for glare-free daylight, tilt down for privacy, close flat for dark. That matters more than usual on a Paarl Rock-facing room, where the sun and its reflected glare arrive from slightly different angles through the afternoon — a venetian lets you chase both without lowering the blind fully and losing the view.

Where venetians win, and where they don't

They're the right call for a heritage sash window, a bathroom or kitchen, and any room where hour-by-hour light control matters more than an unbroken view. On a very wide span they need splitting or ladder-tape support, and on a floor-to-ceiling wine-estate glass wall a roller usually reads cleaner — we'll say so plainly rather than push the wrong product for the opening.

What it costs, in figures

Guides, per square metre installed. Aluminium slats of 25mm or 50mm price at R1,000 to R1,500 on a wand or cord, and at R2,500 to R3,600 once motorised. Timber, wider and finished by hand, prices at R1,600 to R2,600 hand-operated, and at R3,000 to R4,500 with a motorised tilt.

Here the room usually settles the material rather than the budget: timber beside period joinery in the older streets, aluminium in bathrooms, sculleries and anywhere that meets steam. Deciding that on the day costs less than changing it later. Below roughly a square metre a minimum applies, since headrail, tilt gear and tapes hardly shrink with the pane. Each figure is written down after the free measure.
