Zip Screens & Outdoor Rooms

Vertical screens locked into zipped side channels — the product that turns an open patio into a room you can actually use, most of the year.

The zip difference

The fabric edge is welded into a zipper that runs captive in aluminium side channels — no flapping, no gaps, real wind resistance. An ordinary drop screen flaps and escapes its guides the moment a gust off the Groot Drakenstein or Klein Drakenstein mountains catches it; a zip screen holds tension through it.

Fabric choices

  • Sunscreen mesh (various openness) — keeps the vineyard view, cuts glare and UV, adds daytime privacy, keeps insects out
  • Clear PVC / crystal panels — a wind-and-rain-proof enclosure that keeps the view, ideal for a winter braai room
  • Blockout options where an outdoor screen or west-facing sun needs a harder stop

Why Paarl patios want one

Paarl doesn't get the coast's daily south-easter, but the valley funnels occasional gusts down off the ranges that frame it, and harvest-season heat still pushes people off an unscreened patio by mid-afternoon. Zip screens turn that same space into a usable room through both — enclosed against wind and glare in summer, sealed against a wet Cape winter evening when the mesh swaps for clear panels.

Practical notes

Motorisation is standard on wide spans, with a wind-sensor retract for exposed positions. Spans run to 4m-plus per screen, and channels are colour-matched to the structure — muted tones for estate homes with architectural guidelines to satisfy.

Fitting zip screens across Paarl

On golf and wine estates like Boschenmeer, multi-screen enclosures usually wrap an entertaining terrace in estate-matched tones. In the garden suburb of Courtrai and the family streets of Denneburg, a single screened bay off the kitchen or braai area is the more usual brief.

What it costs, in figures

Zip screens are guided by the square metre of screen, installed: R2,800 to R4,500 hand-operated, R4,000 to R6,000 motorised with wind-sensing control. The zipped side channels and the sealed head are what put a screen above an ordinary outdoor blind of the same size — the reason the fabric stays taut in a south-easter instead of shaking itself loose.

A stoep is normally several bays rather than one wide screen, and a narrow bay is billed at a minimum rather than purely by area. Fabric shifts the number too: an open mesh that keeps the vineyard in view and a solid panel that closes the space in properly are not the same money. Each bay is measured at no cost and priced on its own line in writing before anything is ordered.
